For the first time in recent history, U.S. diagnostic and interventional radiology programs reported in as 100% filled, no programs reported any unfilled first-year radiology residency positions.
Over the past 5 years the numbers for diagnostic radiology have steadily increased. In 2014 just 88.3% of diagnostic radiology residency programs reported being filled with first-year (PGY-1) applicants, but has improved each year since.
The NRMP reported that the 2018 Match was the largest on record, with 37,103 registered applicants vying for 33,167 positions. Diagnostic radiology did well, filling all of the 125 positions at 34 radiology residency programs in the country. The Match results are closely watched because they are predictors of future supply in the physician workforce.
As always, ADVOCATE will keep you up to date on this and all issues impacting radiology as they become available.
