Patient-Facing Status Now Available

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has published additional clarifying information regarding Eligible Clinician’s (EC) patient facing status.  In addition to knowing whether a provider is included in, or exempt from, MIPS for performance year 2017, providers are now able to determine their status with regard to the following areas:

  • patient-facing
  • non-patient facing
  • hospital-based
  • part of a small practice
  • located in a rural area
  • located in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA)

CMS determined patient-facing status by analyzing claims data from September 1, 2015 through August 31, 2016.  Providers deemed patient-facing will be required to report on the Advancing Care Information category while non-patient facing/hospital-based providers will not.  Patient-facing providers who are part of a group that contains more than 15 clinicians are also required to report on additional improvement activities compared to non-patient facing/hospital-based providers.

More detail can be found on the CMS website at using the provider’s NPI number in the search function.

As always, ADVOCATE will keep you up to date on this and all issues impacting radiology as they become available.
