The American College of Radiology (ACR), American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) and Radiological Society of North America proposed the designation of specific Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes for breast tomosynthesis at the American Medical Association (AMA) CPT Editorial Panel meeting Feb 6–8 in Phoenix.
The code proposal was presented by Daniel Picus, MD, FACR, chair of the ACR Economics Committee on Coding and Nomenclature and CPT adviser to the AMA CPT Editorial Panel. He spoke in conjunction with Mark Alson, MD, CPT adviser for the ARRS, and Dana Smetherman, MD, FACR, member of the ACR Breast Imaging and Coding and Nomenclature committees.
If approved by the panel, breast tomosynthesis codes will be available for use by the 2015 CPT code cycle.
At the last meeting of the 2015 CPT code cycle, a number of other important code applications were presented. They included proposals for vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty, bone and liver cryoablation, knee arthrography, imaging instructions for endoscopic foreign body removal, transcatheter placement of carotid stents and intracranial embolysis.
ADVOCATE will continue to keep you informed on this and all issues impacting your radiology practice.
