On July 12, 2018, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule that includes proposals to update payment policies, payment rates, and quality provisions for services furnished under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) on or after January 1, 2019.
ZHealth publishing, the national authority on interventional radiology coding, this week provided the 2019 proposed IR CPT Codes. This provides a glimpse at new IR codes in 2019.
While there are many minor revisions and additions, a few of these are of note:
Nine new codes will be released for aspiration biopsy. The new descriptions are a vast improvement and include the terms “aspiration biopsy” which provides greater clarity to coders and is more in line with clinical language. The codes include radiologic guidance and are split by modality.
Another major coding change will be a new code for peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line placements, as these are high volume procedures for many practices. The new code is for a basic PICC line without port placement and will include all radiologic guidance.
Four new codes will be available to describe ultrasound and MR elastography. This is one of the highlights for 2019 coding changes in radiology as more groups are offering these services.
As always, ADVOCATE will keep you up to date on this and all issues impacting radiology as they become available.
